Why summer can feel mentally overwhelming

Summer stress and overwhelm

For many people, summer is something we look forward to all year. We imagine slower mornings, time away, longer evenings, and a chance to recharge.

Yet the reality often feels very different.

The summer months can bring a different kind of pressure. Summer stress and overwhelm can build quietly as we juggle work deadlines before annual leave, trying to fit everything in before going away, entertaining children during the school holidays, caring for family members, travelling, managing everything that comes with everyday life, and then returning to an overflowing inbox afterwards. It’s no wonder many of us feel mentally exhausted rather than refreshed.

Even positive events can become stressful when they add to everything we’re already carrying mentally.

Why summer stress and overwhelm can build so quickly

Our brains thrive on routine and predictability. Familiar patterns help us feel organised, calm, and in control.

During the summer, however, those routines often change. School holidays disrupt daily schedules, annual leave can create additional pressure at work before and after a break, social events, family commitments, and travel all require extra planning and decision-making.

Although many of these experiences are enjoyable, they still require our brains to process more information than usual.

When life becomes busier, our brains don’t always distinguish between “good” stress and “bad” stress. Instead they simply respond to increased demands.

Over time, this can leave us feeling mentally overwhelmed.

Summer stress and overwhelm often develop gradually, which is why many people don’t realise how much pressure they’ve been carrying until they begin to feel exhausted.

When our stress bucket starts to fill

In Solution Focused Hypnotherapy, we often talk about the idea of a stress bucket.

Throughout the summer, lots of small pressures can quietly begin filling that bucket.

Perhaps you’re trying to finish projects before taking annual leave. Maybe you’re arranging childcare, planning days out, managing a family holiday, juggling different routines, or worrying about finances after booking a trip away.

Each of these experiences adds a little more to the bucket.

On their own, they may feel manageable.

Together, they can leave us feeling overwhelmed without fully understanding why.

When our stress bucket becomes too full, we may notice:

  • feeling more irritable than usual
  • struggling to switch off
  • poor sleep or waking during the night
  • feeling emotionally drained
  • difficulty concentrating
  • becoming more anxious or tearful
  • feeling guilty because we’re “supposed” to be enjoying summer

These are often signs that our brains have simply been carrying too much for too long.

Why holidays don’t always leave us feeling rested

Many people expect a holiday to solve everything.

While taking time away can certainly help, it doesn’t automatically empty a stress bucket that has been filling for weeks or even months.

If you’ve spent weeks rushing to prepare for time off, your brain may need time to adjust before it feels able to fully relax.

Likewise, returning home can bring another surge of pressure as routines restart and work begins to pile up again.

This is completely understandable. Your brain simply needs time to move out of survival mode.

Small moments of recovery really do matter

When life feels busy, we often believe we need a whole day to recover.

In reality, our nervous system benefits from regular opportunities to slow down.

Taking a short walk, enjoying a quiet cuppa, practising slow deep breathing, spending time in nature, or simply allowing yourself a few minutes without demands can all help your brain begin to reset.

These small moments won’t remove life’s pressures, but they can help prevent the stress bucket from overflowing quite so quickly.

How Solution Focused Hypnotherapy can help

If summer stress and overwhelm are affecting your wellbeing, it may be time to give yourself permission to seek support.

Solution Focused Hypnotherapy is designed to help calm the nervous system and reduce the impact of ongoing stress. By combining talking therapy with deep guided relaxation, it helps people better understand how stress affects the brain while supporting calmer, healthier patterns of thinking.

Many people seek support for:

  • stress and overwhelm
  • difficulty switching off
  • anxiety and racing thoughts
  • poor sleep
  • feeling emotionally exhausted
  • low confidence and self-esteem
  • building emotional resilience
  • creating a better work-life balance

As stress reduces, many people notice they feel calmer, sleep better, and cope with everyday challenges more easily.

Finding calm this summer

Summer doesn’t have to look perfect to be enjoyable.

Sometimes the greatest gift we can give ourselves is letting go of the expectation that we have to do everything, keep everyone happy, and return from summer feeling completely refreshed.

If you’re feeling more overwhelmed than rested this summer, remember to be kind to yourself.

Sometimes feeling overwhelmed is simply your brain’s way of telling you that it’s time to slow down, recover and recharge.

With the right support and small, consistent changes, it is possible to feel calmer, regain balance, and enjoy life with greater ease.

If stress and overwhelm are affecting your wellbeing, you can read more on my stress and overwhelm service page or contact me for a free 45-minute consultation by email at katie@katiedeacon.co.uk.

Sometimes one small meaningful step can make all the difference.

Solution Based Hypnotherapy

Solution Focused Hypnotherapy is based on the latest clinically proven neuroscience techniques and incorporates elements of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) to help people make significant, positive changes in their lives.

It’s a collaborative process that combines talking therapy, an understanding of our brains, how they get us stuck sometimes, and importantly how we can get them unstuck, and deep relaxation (hypnosis).

Hypnosis is a relaxed, natural state, where the mind calms by using guided relaxation. By guiding you into a deeply relaxed and focused state, your conscious and subconscious minds are able to come together in focus. You are then able to quieten and relax your conscious mind and focus on thoughts and suggestions that might be useful.

Rather than dwelling on past problems or current conflicts, we support you to focus on the present and the desired future you want. Rewiring your brain, allowing you to let go of unhelpful patterns of behaviour and develop new healthier ones. Enabling you to feel calm, clear and empowered to make those real, positive changes in your life.

Frequently asked questions

Solution based hypnotherapy

What is Solution Focused Hypnotherapy?

Solution Focused Hypnotherapy is a gentle, evidence-based approach that combines talking therapy and deep guided relaxation (hypnosis). Rather than dwelling on past problems or current conflicts, we work together to build on your strengths and create positive changes in your life. It’s a collaborative process designed to help you move forward at your own pace.

Will I be in control during hypnosis?

Yes, absolutely. Hypnosis is a natural, relaxed state, similar to daydreaming or that peaceful moment just before sleep. You remain in control throughout, and you can’t be made to do or say anything you don’t want to. It’s simply a time where your mind becomes relaxed and more open to helpful suggestions and new perspectives.

Do I need to talk about my past?

Not at all. Solution Focused Hypnotherapy is focused on the present and your desired future. We don’t dwell on painful memories or analyse the past. Instead, we gently guide your mind toward what’s going well, what you’d like to be different, and how you can begin to make those positives changes in your life.

Can it help with anxiety, low mood, or menopause-related challenges?

Yes. Many clients come to Solution Focused Hypnotherapy for support with anxiety, stress, low mood, sleep difficulties, and the emotional changes that often accompany perimenopause and menopause. Sessions are tailored to support your unique experience, helping you feel calmer, more confident, and more in control.

How many sessions will I need?

Everyone is different, and there’s no one-size-fits-all answer. The number of sessions required depends on your individual needs. Some people notice a shift after just a few sessions, while others benefit from longer-term support. We’ll review progress regularly and work in a way that feels right for you.

Is it like stage hypnosis? Will I cluck like a chicken?

No, not at all. Stage hypnosis is for entertainment, whereas Solution Focused Hypnotherapy is a therapeutic, respectful, and professional approach. You’ll simply experience deep focused relaxation and guided positive suggestions, always with your wellbeing at the heart of the process.

What happens in a typical session?

Each session begins with a relaxed conversation where we focus on what’s going well and how you’d like life to be. I’ll explain a bit about how the brain works, which many clients find comforting and empowering. We’ll then work collaboratively as you identify small changes that you are seeking to make, ending the session with a calming and guided relaxation (hypnosis) session, helping reinforce the positive changes you’re working toward.

Is it suitable for everyone?

Solution Focused Hypnotherapy is a gentle and adaptable approach suitable for most people. If you have specific medical or mental health concerns, we can discuss whether this approach is right for you, and I may recommend speaking to your GP or another professional before starting.

Will I feel better straight away?

Many clients feel a sense of calm and relaxation after the first session, but lasting change tends to build gradually. Like watering a plant, the benefits grow over time as we gently reinforce positive thinking and behaviours.

Where are the sessions held?

The sessions can take place at my therapy room, which is in my home in Cotgrave, Nottingham. It is a calm, private space, designed to feel safe, welcoming and peaceful. A place where you can start to feel comfortable and at ease from the moment you walk in.

We can also hold the sessions online via Zoom.

How long are the hypnotherapy sessions?

The initial consultation is generally 30 to 45 minutes and a hypnotherapy session approximately 60 minutes.

How do I get started?

You can start by booking an initial consultation. This gives us a chance to talk about what you’d like support with, explore how hypnotherapy might help, and answer any other questions you may have. There’s no pressure, just a warm, safe and supportive space for you to consider what feels right for you.

Are you ready to find your inner freedom?

Please note that outcomes may vary for each individual and the number of sessions required depends on your individual needs.
